Project Details

Client: Sunderland City Council

Location: Sunderland

Barnes Park is the largest of Sunderland’s urban parks stretching just under two miles in length. It was first opened in August 1909.

One hundred years later in 2009, Barnes Park underwent a major regeneration closing to the public for almost two years before re-opening in May 2011.

A key part of the restoration programme focused around the lake area and Chris Brammall was commissioned by Sunderland City Council to design and build a bridge to link two footpaths across the lake.

The wide bridge sits low to the water to create a promenade feel. Chris’ design is inspired by the pattern forms and pulse effect depicting the heartbeat of Sunderland. The bridge is built in Corten steel which compliments the natural colour scheme and the park environment and landscape.

What people say?

We have worked with Chris and his team for many years now and they have completed some of our most complicated sculpture projects, with the utmost professionalism and care. Our relationship with CB Arts is more than client/supplier, we see Chris and his team as our partners who we trust. Chris Brammall is an artist in his own right and it is this element that makes his manufacture offer special to us, he understands form, scale, aesthetics and how materials will work in the public realm and this is invaluable.

What people say?

We are so delighted with our two major pieces of work from Chris - a Spitfire Sculpture and our staircase. Chris listened to our requirements and gave us designs which exceeded our expectations. The Spitfire is the first thing you see on arrival at DCS Group and it is simply awesome. Then in reception visitors experience his amazing staircase as they make their way to our meeting rooms. All in all - he has created superb work and we are delighted. We would definitely use Chris again.

We are so pleased with the metalwork installations CB Arts have created and installed at Whitby, the house looks absolutely wonderful, as do the barriers. The installation team were great and everything went smoothly. It has been a pleasure to work with Chris and the team.
