Project Details

Client: South Lakeland District Council

Location: Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria

The Glebe at Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria is a large open space which sits overlooking Lake Windermere.  In 2003, South Lakeland District Council approached Chris Brammall to design a new public performance space as a centre piece to the popular recreational area.

Design by Chris Brammall: Inspiration for the design came from the surroundings and environment - particularly the trees around the Glebe and shores of the lake.  Skeletal like trees provide the two columns, whilst the roof follows the design of leaf form.

Fabrication: The main structure is made from 30mm corten plate, which has been hand-forged and formed into the tree structures.  The roof is made from 6mm Corten the top of which is finished with a liquid copper surface.  This has been allowed to patinate and adds protection to the structure.  The main structural beam between the two leaf forms has been specifically fabricated to take water away from the structure into a hidden down spout in one of the trees. The base has a framed outer ring with a resin bound surface of the main performance area.

Installation: Chris Brammall was responsible for the delivery of the complete installation process including ground works.  The project took approx. 15 weeks to complete.  The bandstand is now one of the most recognized public realm pieces in the Chris Brammall portfolio.

Dimensions: 9m diameter x 7.2m high

What people say?

We have worked with Chris and his team for many years now and they have completed some of our most complicated sculpture projects, with the utmost professionalism and care. Our relationship with CB Arts is more than client/supplier, we see Chris and his team as our partners who we trust. Chris Brammall is an artist in his own right and it is this element that makes his manufacture offer special to us, he understands form, scale, aesthetics and how materials will work in the public realm and this is invaluable.

What people say?

We are so delighted with our two major pieces of work from Chris - a Spitfire Sculpture and our staircase. Chris listened to our requirements and gave us designs which exceeded our expectations. The Spitfire is the first thing you see on arrival at DCS Group and it is simply awesome. Then in reception visitors experience his amazing staircase as they make their way to our meeting rooms. All in all - he has created superb work and we are delighted. We would definitely use Chris again.
